State Central Library

This library was started in 1829 by Travancore kings and is currently under the control of Govt of Kerala. Building at the left-hand-side is the Malayalam library,the one at center has English,Hindi,Tamill and Sanskrit books.The right most one is exclusively for children. There is a children's park and Subhiksha canteen inside the library campus. Said to be free wifi-zone, but havent checked service reliability. Very limited parking spaces are available (around 10 cars can be parked) for membership holders. Life-long membership can be availed at a nominal cost. For a onetime subscription fee of Rs 400/-, 5 Books and 2 periodicals can be availed. No other reading fee, if books are returned in time. First-time allowed reading time is one month which can further be extended to a maximum of 1 more month. Extensions and prebooking of books can be done through online portal. During mid summer-vaccation, Library conducts summer classes for children led by resourceful people. A cosy place for readers to sit and read.

I got an opportunity to visit Thiruvananthapuram Public Library through an educational tour organized by our college. We can say that was a book depot of state capital. We can see wide range of books. English books,malayalam books and tamil books each have a separate section. They Provided facilities for reading books. Eventhough they were provided separate section for children. Children above 14 were allowed to have library cards and can come alongwith their parents. An amazing place to quench our knowledge thirst.

The administration of the State Central Library is vested with the State Librarian, who is the Head of the Department. There is an Advisory Committee in the Library. Two Deputy State Librarians assist the State Librarian in Library, academic and the Administrative Assistant to the State Librarian assist the State Librarian in the Administrative, Accounts and Audit matters.The library has a total collection of 455274 documents in different languages such as English, Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Sanskrit in various disciplines.
